Andrés Velencoso: the desire body with
Catalan roots
With only 29 years, this Catalan from Tossa de Mar has demonstrated that in
our country there is a good level of models. The Andrés Velencoso budget
rises like the foam. He is the more quoted international model and he has
worked with stars like Jennifer López. His success is so big that in April
of 2003 the French Vogue magazine dedicated him a 12 pages report. That same
year he was also chosen to be the best masculine model by the readers of a
national magazine. In 2006, in the designer Konrad Muhr fashion show in
Barcelona, he shared protagonism with the singer Carlos Baute. And Andrés
Velencoso has won a place among the best.
Tell us about the beginning of Andrés Velencoso.
I started 8 years ago, like someone who doesn’t want that work, in
Barcelona, where I was studying tourism and working at the same time with my
father. In that year I started to work as a model. I did a couple of things
in Barcelona for a national level. All of a sudden, while I was finishing my
studies, I saw in a point in my life in which I didn’t know where to go.
Then I took the decision of travelling, because that’s what I had heard that
models do, travelling out of Spain.
You went to fashion shows in Milan, Paris and finally New York, where you
were able to reach when you were still very young. At the time, it was clear for
you what you wanted?
The beginning was really hard because of the language barrier, which was the
worst that I had to face. But with small steps you keep on working and keep
on standing and the doors start to open... The truth is that it went very
good for me. I didn’t have as much difficulties as others. The more
difficult for me was here, in Spain. The truth is that in fashion,
especially in New York, I was very well received.
You have been the image of important advertising campaigns like Banana
Republic, Chanel, Cortefiel, H&M, L’ Oreal... And in addition to that, Louis
Vuitton chose you to be the model for the Autumn-Winter 2003 campaign, with
Jennifer López. What was like this experience?
As a model, I will not say that it was just one more work to do, but a work
in which I proposed myself to do it the best way I could. It was wonderful
and personally, it was a great experience working with a star. At first she
surprised me a lot, being I especially so young. It opened many doors to me,
especially in Spain, because an international campaign, out of Spain doesn’t
last as much as here and people don’t recognize you too much. But here, in
Spain, still people talk about it and recognize me for that.
After this campaign, a new one is proposed to you, being the image of
Allure Sport Homme from Chanel, although it hasn’t been the only one, since we
have been able to see you in campaigns like Jean Paul Gaultier, among others.
In fact yes, the truth is that it is a television and photography campaign
that has already four years and they keep on showing it. They put it during
spring and summer and then they take it off... If you have luck, you will
sign a contract for two years, and if you have more luck, like me, people
will recognize you a lot by that campaign. In fact, people recognize you
more by the perfume campaigns, than by the cloth’s ones. Although with me it
happen the opposite because I’m more recognized by my work with Jennifer
Lopez.
Just a while ago we could also see you on the "Moda Cálida 2007" fashion
show, showing the summer 2008 collections, among models like Bar Raffelli or
Ariadne Artiles. How did the presentation go?
The organization was superb and they treated us very well. Sun and beach
between breaks... For me it was brilliant, because I was just arriving from
New York, where it was colder, and I went directly. On the other hand, I
coincided with friends that I hadn’t seen for a while. I didn’t know Bar
Raffelli and I had the pleasure of meeting her there. It was one more
fashion show…
You also were recently in Thailand, this month you have been in
Beijing...we are not used to see you a lot here. Do you miss your hometown?
I miss it a lot of and that causes that I live it very intensively when I’m
here. Sometimes I come to Madrid and take a flight to Barcelona to be able
to pass the weekend with my family. I do it whenever I can.
In Beijing we saw you in a new campaign for "Zegna".
Yes, I did it for Ermenegildo Zegna, which is a much known Italian company
that makes man suits. Soon you will see me elegant.
You’re number 37 on the models.com ranking. Is there competitiveness among
the models? (Edit: He's actually now number 21)
There is more competitiveness among brands than among models. Maybe among
women there is little more but I still think that it’s the brands that
compete. In the ranking, there are models that haven’t been working for
years and occupy the first positions, while others that are working a lot
are in the last ones.
What was the best moment of your career?
Personally, the best moments I had were those where I’ve been able to meet
people that now are my best friends.
What short term projects do you have?
Works have come to me suddenly... and I will go with small steps because
there are projects to make and I want them to come out.
